[Poem a Day] “Word Problems”

As writers, even when we make it, we fall short.

But we fall short artistically, because there’s something inherently poetic about using words to try and get close to a thing while knowing that it’s only possible to skim the surface. Nothing’s as definitive as our eyes and hearts working in tandem (or whatever it is you believe drives emotion – the soul, the gut, the mind) but writing strives for it like a person strives for a lived moment through memory.

And we can get close and brush against that beauty even if we’re not completely there.
